This position supports the Fleet Performance & Reliability PI/Historian team by integrating new Generation and Transmission assets into the enterprise AVEVA PI system. The role collaborates with plant operations, engineering personnel, and substation support teams to organize, validate, and visualize time‑series data that informs equipment performance and reliability. This is not an IT/Technology Organization or coding-focused position; the PI platform is a configurable tool that can be learned, and a background in equipment, power plant operations, or system operations is strongly beneficial. Responsibilities include developing clear, practical dashboards and analytics used across Generation, Power Delivery, and the Operations Monitoring & Diagnostics Center. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong analytical ability, attention to detail, and a commitment to supporting operational excellence across the fleet.
WORK LOCATION:
This position will be based in Birmingham, AL and require a mix of in-person work at the Energy Center Office in Birmingham as well as minimal travel (up to 10%) to sites across the Southern Company service territory in Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia.
JOB REQUIREMENTS (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills)
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, technology, or a related technical field, or extensive experience in power plant operations or equipment support.
- Understanding of industrial equipment, plant operations, controls, or power system operations; ability to relate data to real-world equipment behavior.
- Ability to learn and effectively use the AVEVA PI System and related visualization tools (e.g., PI Vision, Tableau, Power BI).
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to interpret time‑series data and support data quality efforts.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills for working with plant personnel, engineering groups, and Power Delivery teams.
- Attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple data integration tasks across diverse generating units and transmission assets.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Integrate new Generation and Transmission assets into the AVEVA PI System, ensuring accurate and consistent data flow across the fleet.
- Collaborate with plant operations, engineering teams, and substation support personnel to understand equipment behavior and translate operational needs into effective data structures and visualizations.
- Develop and maintain dashboards, displays, and analytics using PI Vision, Tableau, Power BI, and related tools to support performance monitoring and reliability analysis.
- Monitor data quality, troubleshoot issues, and implement improvements to ensure reliable time‑series data for decision‑making across Generation and Power Delivery.
- Provide user support, training, and technical guidance to stakeholders to enhance their effective use of the PI System and its associated visualization tools.
