Field Geologist / Geological Engineer – Civil Field Services / Drilling Services
(Home Office - Vincent, AL)
Summary of Position Duties:
This position will primarily be responsible for the performance of geological fieldwork, providing technical direction and the successful execution of subsurface field investigations in support of engineering site assessments, environmental studies, and foundation remediations.
Position duties include:
- Field oversight for monitoring well installation programs, foundation investigations, underground utility investigations, or related projects
- Perform soil (ASTM D2488 guidelines) and rock logging
- Prepare professional logs for soil, rock, and monitoring well construction data
- Manage drilling and other related contractors according to company guidelines and procedures
- Interface with various customers and assist Drilling Services leaders and internal drilling resources to facilitate field investigations
Educational Requirements:
- B.S. Degree in Geology / Geological Engineering or related discipline is required
- Professional Geologist / Engineer license is not required, but is a plus
Experience Requirements:
- 5 + years working directly in a geological, environmental, engineering, construction, or other related field
Knowledge, Skills, and Attributes:
- Experience in executing field investigations utilizing various drilling methods and resources
- Experience with soil and rock logging, monitoring well construction, groundwater monitoring, and field data reporting
- Knowledge of environmental sampling and testing methods
- General knowledge of federal, state, and local regulatory requirements
- Experience with projecting and managing project budgets
- Working knowledge of various Boring Log Programs (e.g. gINT, BoreDM, TabLogs)
- Flexible computer skills. Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to work with limited supervision
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Safety first mindset
- Exhibit customer focus and conflict resolutions skills
Travel Requirements:
- 95-100% travel required, Monday – Thursday (Most Fridays and weekends off)
- Typical work schedule is 4 / 10-hour days per week (Monday – Thursday), work week may be extended based on project and or client needs
- Work location: Home Office is Logan Martin Geological Building 93, located in Vincent, Alabama; Field work at various sites throughout Southern Company’s operating system. Hybrid / Remote work is acceptable if candidate’s home of residence is in Alabama, Mississippi, or Georgia
