JOB SUMMARY
The GPC Area Planning team is looking for a forward-thinking and skilled teammate who is excited to shape the future of energy in Georgia! This position has a variety of key responsibilities that produce real-world impacts, such as developing effective solutions for new and existing customers, maintaining the reliability of Georgia Power's transmission and substation facilities, and providing area planning services for Georgia Integrated Transmission System (ITS) participants. The successful candidate will gain valuable experience towards understanding how our system works from both technical and business perspectives, while also deepening communication and presentation skills with peers and leaders.
The successful candidate will support one of the following GPC areas: Metro (Atlanta) North, Northwest (Rome), or Northeast (Athens), primarily based on demonstrated experience and operational familiarity. This posting may be used to select multiple qualified candidates.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop innovative and cost-effective solutions for electric service to new and existing customers, maintaining the reliability of Georgia Power's transmission and substation facilities.
- Forecast, plan, and develop transmission and/or substation addition and improvement projects for a 5-year budget period.
- Perform normal and contingency loading studies for substation and sub-transmission lines, voltage drop, flicker, transformer capability and other technical studies. Develop innovative and cost-effective solutions for resolving these problems.
- Proactively build and maintain relationships with associates in Transmission, Distribution, Sales, ITS, and other organizations.
- Provide Area Planning services for the Georgia Integrated Transmission System (ITS) Participants including peak load and forecast data.
- Facilitate and execute both virtual and in person (field locations, substations, and line rights of way) solution team meetings.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
Educational/Certification Requirements:
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering/Engineering Technology or significant utility experience (10+years) required.
- Electrical or Mechanical Engineering degree/discipline preferred.
- Professional Engineer's License a plus.
Technical Experience Requirements:
- A minimum of 3 years Transmission and/or Distribution experience is required.
- Technical knowledge in Distribution Reliability, Distribution Planning, Distribution Engineering, Substation Design or Protective Equipment Applications, Transmission Construction, Transmission Line Design, Substation P&C Field Services, Transmission Maintenance (Line or Sub), Transmission Project Management or System Operations.
Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities
- Knowledge of the Transmission and/or Distribution system

- Ability to build and maintain professional working relationships with internal and external clients.

- Experience with Southern Company internally-developed software (particularly TEAMS and STOMP) preferred
- Experience with PSS/E or other System Modeling software is a plus.
- Experience using the Microsoft Office Suite, including Microsoft Access, is a plus.
