The Modeling and Engineering engineer/specialist/analysist position will serve within the Distribution Management Systems department on the Distribution Support team.
The modeling team is responsible for updating and maintaining the system models that operators use to safely monitor and operate the electric grid. The distribution models are built using GE e-terra energy management systems which portray real-time system configurations. This team provides continuous support to its internal and external customers to accurately update the system models as changes are made in the field. Updates include but are not limited to adding/retiring equipment, relay modernizations, ratings changes, updating communication devices, ad hoc requests to enhance displays and troubleshooting abnormalities.
This position is primarily responsible for a variety of tasks associated with maintaining the DSCADA system model – including customer coordination, database management and maintaining or creating system displays utilized by operators to monitor and control the distribution system.
Job Responsibilities
- Perform modeling and engineering tasks associated with ensuring the DSCADA system database and displays accurately reflect real-time system conditions
- Be a primary point of contact for coordinating work within assigned area of responsibility
- Build and establish productive relationships with customers and communicate effectively and promptly to understand and support their needs
- Foster constant innovation in processes and tools by means of automation, programming and collaboration.
- Support employee-led safety culture and human performance initiatives
- Support projects/committees in Distribution Support and across Southern Company as required
Job Requirements
Education:
- Bachelors or Associates in Engineering degree preferred
- Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or Computer Engineering degree a plus
Experience:
- Proficiency with GE and/or Siemens Energy Management System (EMS) is preferred
- Working knowledge of Distribution and/or Transmission systems is preferred
- Experience with SCADA or equivalent design systems is a plus
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office applications is a plus
- Experience with coding and programming is a plus
- Knowledge of any SCADA hardware systems is a plus
