APPRENTICE MECHANIC (Repair Shop)

JOB SUMMARY
The Apprentice Mechanic is a training position to develop the knowledge and skills a Journeyman Mechanic will need to perform their job safely and competently. This position is located at the Repair Shop facility in Forest Park, GA. However, on occasion, you will be expected to travel to other work locations to repair equipment on site.
An Apprentice Mechanic will work alongside a Journeyman Mechanic at the Repair Shop to train and complete tasks associated with the Journeyman Development program to provide fabrication support to generation, distribution, and transmission projects. Duties include but are not limited to general metal fabrication based on the needs of our customers. Related activities include the general usage of hand tools along with operating equipment such as mobile and overhead cranes, forklifts, saws, drill press, rolling machine, pipe bender and threader, metal brake and shear, pneumatic tools, TIG, MIG, and Stick welders, and plasma cutting table.
Candidates must be able to support a 24/7 work schedule (shift work) including holidays and overtime when necessary. Must be willing to work various shifts, generally day or evening shifts. Subject to callout overtime situations.
Work environment may include working in adverse conditions such as poor weather and hot / cold temperatures, at elevated heights, or in compartments with restricted space.
The starting salary will be based upon the conditions of the Memorandum of Agreement Wage Schedule between Georgia Power and IBEW Local Union Number 84.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Education Required:
High School diploma or equivalent required.
To be considered for an interview, candidates must qualify on both of the following: Construction and Skilled Trades Test (CAST) and the Skills, Knowledge, and Aptitude Test (SKAT) - Mechanical.
Preferred:
Two-year technical degree or certificate in Mechanical Technology and/or related experience in Industrial Fabrication or Mechanical Maintenance.
TIG, MIG and Stick welding experience.
Metal fabrication experience.
Military experience as Mechanical Technician.
Experience Requirements:
This is an entry level position with experience in Industrial Mechanic and Mechanical maintenance.
Candidate must have strong safety awareness and adherence to safety practices.
Job Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Good written and verbal communication skills.
Good hand and eye coordination.
Ability to read, understand, and follow procedures, rules, and regulations.
Ability to use basic hand and power tools.
Ability to use precision measuring tools.
Ability to be on feet for long periods of time often doing repetitive motions.
Ability to read and understand blueprints and manuals.
Ability to identify different metals for welding applications.
Familiar with AWS and ASME standards and TIG, MIG, and Stick welding applications.
Behavioral Aspects:
Candidate must be willing to maintain regular attendance.
The candidate must be available to work outside normal operating hours which could include nights, weekends, and holidays including travel.
Candidate must be able to work various shifts, primarily day and evening shifts.
Must be available to respond to any emergency callout.
The candidate must be a team player, customer oriented, trainable, and willing to develop their career.
Must understand the value of customer service and support.
Work outside basic job functions as needed to support the business.
Other Requirements:
This is an IBEW covered position.
Valid driver's license is required.
Must possess or able to obtain a Department of Transportation (DOT) medical certification card within the first 6 months on the job.
Candidates must be willing to work outside in all climate conditions and work at heights requiring the use of fall-protection (greater than 4ft.)
Work in tight or congested areas and in abnormal positions.
Must successfully qualify on the Physical Abilities Test (PAT) by demonstrating ability to complete certain physical tasks.
Additional Information
Pay
- This is a position covered by a collective bargaining agreement between Georgia Power Company and IBEW Local 84. Union membership is optional. Current starting pay is $6218 per month / $35.87 per hour and is not negotiable.
TRAINING
Apprentice Mechanics will undergo an extensive training program through the Repair Shop Journeyman Development Program, which includes on-the-job training with classroom training. The training program lasts 3 1/2 years. Upon successful completion of the Repair Shop Journeyman Development Program the employee will be promoted to a Journeyman Mechanic position through automatic progression.
