JOB SUMMARY
The DERMS Operations Specialist plays a crucial role in the development and implementation of the Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS). This newly created position offers a unique opportunity to be at the forefront of innovation, laying the groundwork for the expansion of energy management within the distribution system. The DERMS Operations Specialist is responsible for the real-time and near-real-time operational integration of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) on the electric distribution system. This role ensures DERs are operated safely, reliably, and in compliance with grid constraints, using DERMS and related advanced distribution applications. The engineer serves as a technical bridge between distribution system operators, planning, IT/OT systems, and DER programs.
Currently, DERMS is in Phase I of implementation, focusing on visibility of the distribution system. During this stage, the DERMS Engineer/Operator will maintain system awareness, monitor distributed resources, and evaluate load and generation forecasts. As we prepare for Phase II, which includes system optimization and dispatch, the DERMS Operations Specialist will contribute to the development of user interfaces, tools, and processes necessary for seamless and reliable DERMS operations. Additionally, as new distributed resources are integrated into the system, the DERMS Operations Specialist will ensure communication paths are established for real-time monitoring and dispatch.
This role will initially follow a hybrid work schedule, with four days per week (Monday – Thursday) at the office located at 241 Ralph McGill.
Job Duties & Responsibilities:
- Serves as the DERMS Operations Specialist, maintaining visibility and optimization of the distribution system while also facilitating the development of relevant tools, processes, and new resource interconnections.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Experience and Education:
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in power delivery is required.
- A bachelor’s degree or relevant work experience is required.
- Distribution or Transmission Control Center experience is preferred.
- Experience in renewables, storage, and/or analytics is a plus.
- Experience in data validation and alarm management a plus.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of distribution and/or bulk electric system operations.
- Proven problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot complex issues and prioritize work effectively with minimal supervision.
- Strong communication, analytical, and organizational skills.
- Proficiency in using various applications and tools simultaneously.
- Ability to learn interconnection policies, program guidelines, and generator requirements to effectively implement and manage the operation of distributed generating resources.
- Ability to maintain situational awareness and make sound decisions in a dynamic environment.
- Ability to organize, manage, and direct multiple activities in a timely and effective manner.
- Ability to recognize potential problems and develop appropriate plans of action.
- Ability to issue and execute operating instructions in a professional, timely, and clear manner.
