JOB SUMMARY:
The purpose of this position is to manage individual medium to large scale fixed asset projects associated with the Southern Company Gas Project Management Organization (PMO) including the initiation, planning, execution, and closing of projects involved with natural gas peaking and storage facility construction. Assigned projects pertain to LNG peaking facilities that fall within the Atlanta Gas Light (AGL) territory and could also include CNG, compression, pipeline, and other associated facilities. The Project Manager is responsible for overseeing the execution of the related infrastructure improvement projects to meet business objectives consisting of development of new asset replacement projects, regulatory interaction along with annual regulatory filings, setting and meeting annual budget targets, and ensuring schedules are met.
In addition, this position will partner with the Project Controls department to be responsible for managing, controlling and reporting on the capital expenditures associated with the work. The position will lead cross functional teams requiring significant coordination with internal and external stakeholders such as Project Controls, Engineering, Construction, Land, Environmental, Operations, System Planning, Corrosion, and associated contractors. This position applies PMO strategies, protocols and techniques to deliver projects, programs and assets according to design, schedules and budgets while adhering to the Company’s standards, specifications and Asset Development Process (ADP).
Projects and programs this position will direct include:
- Cherokee LNG Expansion project
- Riverdale LNG Generation, Liquefaction, and Pump projects
- Valdosta LNG project
- Macon LNG Generation project
- New project and program needs as they are identified
Additional responsibilities include:
- ALG regulatory and rate case filing support
- Asset Development Process (ADP) and Unifier champion
- Development and management of 10 year capital plan for assigned projects and programs
Major job responsibilities:
- Ensure the Company’s safety philosophy is engrained in all aspects of the business and within each project and program
- Implement project management strategies to successfully manage high risk, complex, and high-cost asset development projects, programs, and strategic opportunities
- Champion the Company’s stage-gated Asset Development Process (ADP) ensuring that projects and programs are executed accordingly, and lead projects through ADP Stages as applicable including Stage Gate Reviews
- Ensure compliance with Company policies, procedures, and processes to support the asset development in a safe, cost effective, and timely manner
- Establish and manage budgets and funding levels for assigned projects and programs, and ensure monthly financials forecasts and reports are prepared including updated estimates, schedules, and variance explanations
- Establish and maintain project schedules utilizing Project Controls Scheduler or other resource
- Monitor project procurement activities to acquire equipment, materials, and services as needed, including strong contract management to ensure contractors and suppliers adhere to commercial and technical contract requirements, execute deviations through proper change management, and ensure contractor invoices and payments are reviewed and compliant per contract
- Establish and maintain excellent working relationships and partnerships with peers, senior leadership, external contractors and vendors by engaging various Stakeholders, including Gatekeepers, Sponsors, Track Leads, Functional Leads, and Subject Matter Experts to ensure communication levels are appropriate, financial information is accurate
- Champion Risk Management including identification, management, and mitigation throughout the life of the project or program
- Drive change and champion Continuous Improvement and Lessons Learned principles by leading project teams through Lessons Learned review at each project Stage, and when appropriate follow through on broader process improvement initiatives
- Ensure that project job records, as-builts, other job documentation are secured from internal and external parties and are distributed to appropriate Office of Record for permanent retention
- Participate in business, industry, and community associations as appropriate to advocate company values and interests while demonstrating industry leadership
- Support Regulatory initiatives as needed including preparation of filings, testimony review, and support of data requests responses
Qualifications
Education, Certifications/Licenses:
Required:
- BA/BS in Engineering (Mechanical, Civil, or Electrical), or other relevant work experience
Preferred:
- MBA, Project Management Professional (PMP), Professional Engineer (PE)
Related Work Experience:
Required:
- 5+ years’ experience working in the natural gas transmission, distribution or related energy field
- 3+ years leading project planning and execution
- Contractor management
Preferred:
- Project Management experience including leading project team and stakeholder status meetings
- Experience managing projects

Specific Skills & Knowledge:
Required:
- Strong engineering knowledge. Prefer knowledge of natural gas peaking, storage, and transmission systems, gas engineering principles and theories, and DOT pipeline safety regulations
- Strong construction knowledge. Prefer knowledge of natural gas and multi-discipline process facility construction.
- Ability to manage multiple simultaneous projects
- Ability to communicate with all levels in the organization
- Ability to influence and persuade in decision making
- Experience preparing project cost estimates, forecasts and developing project schedules, preferably in natural gas transmission systems, natural gas distribution systems, LNG, gas engineering principles and theories, and DOT pipeline safety regulations
- Ability to use project management tools and methods (e.g., earned value analysis, critical path scheduling, project administration, establishing project teams)
- Experience developing, initiating, and managing contracts and bid solicitations
- MS Office - intermediate proficiency, especially with Excel, Word and PowerPoint
