Continuous Improvement Analyst / Engineer
SCS Operations Services - Continuous Improvement & Learning

WORK LOCATION

  • This position will be based out of Birmingham, AL.
  • This position will require a mix of both field and office work.
  • Some office work can be performed remotely (telework/work from home).


POSITION SUMMARY

Continuous Improvement & Learning (CI&L) supports Operations' business units by advancing four pillars of Continuous Improvement: Learn, Share, Improve, and Act. Support is provided to all business units inside Southern Company Operations and occasionally includes teams under the broader Southern Company umbrella.

This role contributes to CI&L's objectives by defining, planning, and implementing improvement and learning efforts. This may include improving processes, operational and tactical planning, event learning, establishing best practices, and applying learnings for the benefit of the broader organization.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Identify and/or evaluate business processes for improvement opportunities.
  • Knowledge of process mapping techniques and the ability to identify inefficiencies in business processes.
  • Lead cross-functional teams to define, analyze, and implement process improvement.
  • Engage and build strong relationships with field-based customers in Operations to understand their needs and challenges related to process improvement.
  • Develop and maintain metrics to track progress against improvement goals to help drive accountability.
  • Train and coach employees on process improvement methodologies.
  • Support the development and execution of operational and tactical plans for Operations business unit initiatives.
  • Effectively communicate project status to stakeholders, project team members, and customers.
  • Lead and write reports for learning method approaches (e.g., event learnings, post-job reviews) to help drive sustainable improvements for Operations organizational learning culture.
  • Analyze and strategically apply local learnings to relevant parts of Operations.
  • Support the corrective action tracking process and help to develop a strategy to improve accountability.


POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, science or another relevant field is preferred.
  • Lean Six Sigma or other process improvement related certification is strongly preferred.


Experience

  • Two (2) years' formal or informal process improvement experience is required.
    • Process improvement defined as making processes more effective, efficient, safer, or transparent.
  • Experience leading/participating in projects with cross-functional teams is required.
  • Technical experience related to the energy industry (e.g., generation, power delivery, etc.) or relevant heavy industry (i.e., chemical, pulp/paper, manufacturing, etc.) is required.
  • Diverse project related background is preferred.
  • Experience working within multiple Southern Company business units is a plus.
  • Project and program management experience is a plus.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Understanding of both formal and informal processes within Operations.
  • Understanding of Operations business units and the nuances of how work is performed across matrixed organizational lines.
  • Ability to systematically analyze a problem, identify latent causes, and develop sound solutions.
  • Able to communicate with all levels of management in both written and oral formats.
  • Able to build effective partnerships in a technical, cross-functional, and matrixed organization.
  • Able to think strategically, recognize gaps in processes, and create action plans.
  • Outstanding written and presentation skills.
  • Most be proficient with Microsoft Office Software.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

  • This position will require up to 30% travel per year including some overnight trips.
  • Most travel is pre-planned and within Southern Company's traditional southeast footprint.


ADDITIONAL DETAILS

  • Successful candidate will be required to live in the vicinity of the Birmingham area.
  • No relocation assistance will be offered.
