This is an accountant position in the Alabama Power Accounting Research and Internal Controls department and will be filled depending on the skills and abilities of the successful candidate. This position will have responsibility for the following:
- Research associated with technical accounting and regulatory issues, formulating accounting conclusions, and formally documenting the Company's position
- Providing Accounting management with assurance that the financial reporting and disclosures of the Company are accurate by ensuring compliance with all accounting principles and regulatory requirements
- Review of contracts entered into by the Company to ensure proper Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and regulatory accounting treatment
- Quarterly coordination of Company controls and compliance initiatives
- Review of all new pronouncements, standards, interpretations, and directives issued by the Financial Accountings Standards Board (FASB), Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), and Alabama Public Service Commission (APSC)
This position will work directly with Alabama Power Company's (APC) Accounting Finance and Treasury (AFT) organization, AFT management, other system departments, other operational management, internal auditors, external auditors, and any other providers or users of accounting data to ensure compliance with emerging and changing issues. We will consider teleworking options for locations outside of Birmingham, with the understanding that frequent trips to Birmingham will be required.
JOB REQUIREMENTS

Experience & Education:
- BS or BA in Accounting is required
- CPA and an advanced degree are preferred
- 2+ years of work experience in an accounting discipline (Internal Controls experience and GAAP Knowledge preferred)
- Experience with a public accounting firm is desirable
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Knowledge and ability to apply GAAP and SEC rules and reporting requirements
- Knowledge of Sarbanes-Oxley Act and Committee of Sponsoring Organization framework
- Working knowledge of accounting research tools a plus
- Ability to research and understand accounting transactions and regulatory issues and provide sound guidance
- Strong analytical and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines
- Strong oral and written communication skills with ability to communicate effectively at all levels
- Ability to communicate accounting applications and analysis to non-financial personnel
- Exhibit strong initiative and require minimal supervision
- Must handle confidential and sensitive information
- Knowledge of FERC System of Accounts and rate making concepts a plus
